Maintenance Guide

Engines

If you’re buying a Land Rover Discovery Sport, the engine choice matters more than almost anything else. Some engines have an excellent reputation, while others are known for expensive problems.

Petrol

  • Better for mainly short trips.
  • Avoids DPF and many AdBlue issues.
  • Generally less troublesome if you don’t do high mileage.

Diesel

  • Better fuel economy for long-distance driving.
  • More maintenance-sensitive.
  • Higher risk of emissions-system repairs.

EngineReliabilityRunning costsRecommendation
2.2 TD4/SD4 (2015–16)★★★★★★★★★☆Best used diesel
2.0 Petrol (2019+)★★★★☆★★★☆☆Best for short trips
P300e Hybrid★★★★☆★★★★☆Good if you can charge regularly
2.0 Ingenium Diesel★★☆☆☆★★☆☆☆Only with excellent history

What to check for

  • Full service history (preferably Land Rover or specialist)
  • Evidence of timing chain inspection or replacement (Ingenium diesel)
  • Smooth gearbox operation
  • No drivetrain or AWD warnings
  • No coolant loss
  • No excessive engine rattles on cold start
  • DPF and AdBlue system operating correctly
  • Diagnostic scan for stored fault codes

A pre-purchase inspection by a Land Rover specialist is often worthwhile, especially for diesel models, as it can identify issues that aren’t obvious during a test drive.

Best Years

  • 2019 onward models generally improved after updates.
  • Later engines tend to be more refined, though regular servicing remains essential.

Common Issues

If you’re considering a Land Rover Discovery Sport (2015 onwards), there are several recurring issues which can cause big problems for your ownership experience.  Reliability varies significantly depending on the engine, model year, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.

Preventative Maintenance

A preventative maintenance schedule makes a bigger difference on a Discovery Sport than on many other SUVs. Sticking to the manufacturer’s service intervals alone—especially on diesel models—can increase the risk of costly failures.

2.0 Ingenium Diesel

Every 10,000 miles

  • Oil and filter
  • Listen for timing chain noise at cold start
  • Check for oil dilution (rising oil level or diesel smell in the oil)

Every 20,000 miles

  • Air filter
  • Fuel filter
  • Inspect turbo hoses for oil leaks
  • Inspect intercooler hoses

Every 30,000–40,000 miles

  • Remove and inspect the EGR system if symptoms develop
  • Perform a diagnostic scan for stored fault codes
  • Check DPF soot loading with suitable diagnostic equipment

Around 60,000 miles

  • Inspect timing chain condition if any rattle is present
  • Inspect water pump
  • Replace auxiliary belt if worn

All Engines

Every 10,000 miles (or annually)

  • Engine oil and filter (use the correct Land Rover-approved specification)
  • Check coolant level and condition
  • Check brake fluid level
  • Inspect suspension bushes and ball joints
  • Inspect auxiliary drive belt
  • Check battery health and charging voltage
  • Inspect tyres for uneven wear (can indicate suspension alignment issues)

Tip: Ignore the extended oil service intervals if you want maximum engine life. Fresh oil is one of the best investments you can make.

Gearbox

Although Land Rover often describes the transmission as “sealed for life,” many transmission specialists recommend more frequent servicing.

Every 50,000–60,000 miles

  • Gearbox oil change
  • Replace transmission filter if applicable
  • Reset gearbox adaptations if required after servicing

This can improve shift quality and reduce wear.

Haldex

Many owners overlook this.

Every 30,000–40,000 miles

  • Replace Haldex oil
  • Clean or replace the Haldex filter/screen (depending on the generation)
  • Check the AWD pump operation

Neglecting this can lead to loss of four-wheel drive and expensive repairs.

Mileage Checklist

MileageRecommended MaintenanceWhy It Matters
Every 10,000 miles / 12 monthsEngine oil & filter, vehicle health inspectionHelps prevent timing chain wear, turbo issues and premature engine wear.
20,000 milesReplace engine air filter, cabin pollen filter, fuel filter (diesel)Maintains performance, fuel economy and protects the fuel system.
30,000–40,000 milesHaldex AWD service (oil & filter/screen), inspect DPF and EGR systemPrevents AWD pump failure and costly drivetrain repairs.
40,000 milesBrake fluid replacement (if not already completed within 2 years)Prevents moisture build-up and maintains braking performance.
50,000–60,000 milesAutomatic gearbox oil service, rear differential oil, transfer case oilExtends the life of the transmission and four-wheel-drive system.
60,000 milesCooling system inspection, auxiliary belt inspection/replacement, inspect water pump & thermostatHelps prevent overheating and expensive engine damage.
60,000–80,000 milesSuspension inspection (control arm bushes, anti-roll bar links, wheel bearings)Restores ride quality and prevents uneven tyre wear.
70,000–100,000 miles (Ingenium diesel)Timing chain inspection (replace if noisy or worn)One of the most important preventative checks on Ingenium diesel engines.
Every 5 yearsReplace engine coolantProtects against corrosion and overheating.
